Christmas is traditionally a time for getting together with family and friends, but for many - especially in this most difficult of years - it is a lonely prospect. 'Peace at Christmas Time' encourages greater awareness of those people who, for whatever reason, struggle through the festive season.

I used to count the days all through December,

From one up to that magic twenty-five,

It always seemed to take a thousand lifetimes

For that special day to finally arrive.

I used to play the piano rather badly,

While all the family tried to sing along,

Christmas carols after Christmas dinner,

Though no one seemed to mind when I went wrong.



Deck the halls, it’s Christmas time,

Goodwill in our hearts and minds,

Once a year we’ll all be kind,

Let’s drink a toast to peace at Christmas time.



Year by year those Christmases got smaller,

Eventually we sold the family home,

And when the big day rolled round that December,

I drank a toast to Christmas all alone.

That day I really seemed to hit rock bottom,

And I only drank the wine to dull the pain,

But the new year brought new love, so unexpected,

Opening up my heart to feel again.

Goodwill in our hearts and minds,

Once a year we’ll all be kind,

Let’s drink a toast to peace at Christmas time.



Christmas can be magic and enchanting,

Twelve days most children never want to end,

But the same time can feel cruel and everlasting

To those who have no family or friends.

So offer peace and love to all around you,

Bring everyone a touch of Christmas cheer,

Sprinkle joy and laughter through December,

And pray that it’ll last throughout the year.
