about

Although this song is clearly about a grandmother's undying love for her granddaughter, it was inspired by a photo I took of my elderly mother holding Chilli, one of my miniature dachshunds, in her arms - I put it on Facebook with the caption "Safe in Grandma's Arms", and the seeds of a song took root!

lyrics

Safe in Grandma’s Arms

Little baby born at the end of June,
Mother’s worn out, but her mama’s there too,
Holds the newborn while her daughter sleeps,
Her love for that baby is a love so deep,
She says, “Sweet child, you’ll never come to harm
While you’re safe in Grandma’s arms.”

Five years on, first day at school,
Little girl learns how kids can be cruel,
Cries going home at the end of the day,
Soothed to hear a familiar voice say,
“Sweet child, you’ll never come to harm
While you’re safe in Grandma’s arms.”

There’s strength in her years,
Depth to her soul,
With a love that’s plain to see;
Grandma’s arms are the safest place
That little girl could be.

Eighteen years, just out of school,
Married, it turns out, way too soon,
Only one there to put her back together’s
A silver-haired lady who’ll love her forever,
Says, “Sweet child, you’ll never come to harm
While you’re safe in Grandma’s arms.”

There’s strength in her years,
Depth to her soul,
With a love that’s plain to see;
Grandma’s arms are the safest place
That little girl could be.

Soon, so soon ten years go past,
An elderly lady breathes her last,
And with that breath, these words she finds:
“Young woman, no need to cry,
As long as you live you’ll never come to harm,
For you’re safe in Grandma’s arms,
Oh, as long as you live you’ll never come to harm,
For you’re safe in Grandma’s arms.”
